Learning to share

She lives in Edinburgh.. He lives in Rotterdam..

The past restrictions imposed by the current pandemic on travel and required quarantining have meant that Mark and Aline have been separated for approximately one year now – with their relationship reduced to an online existence.
Recently they have been discussing the possibility of their return to the Netherlands to start living together again.
As self confessed (soft) hypochondriacs, this period has had a profound effect on their ability to socially engage with other people and both have developed their own very specific needs for space and interactions. With the thought of their reunion, questions arise –
How has the past year of living in isolation affected our spatial and interactive needs? Do we need to temporarily redesign our spaces to not only physically accommodate the change but also allow for physiological and emotional reintegration?

Can architectural and interior interventions and systems rethink how we use/share shrinking space in the centre of cities? In the context of the current pandemic our spaces in centre cities are shrinking while our individual need for space is expanding in order to accommodate our fears, concerns and safety. How do we redesign our immediate spaces to accommodate these new emotional needs?

The research explored the gradual reintegration of shared space back into their lives through a self documented autotheory - a return to social engagement both with each other and with the world around them. With Aline contracting Covid-19 on her arrival, the residency had the perfect start to exploring the process of reintegration.

Mark Henning combines performance, objects and communication to design and unpack social and spatial interactions. He has recently completed a Masters in Social Design from the Design Acedemy Eindhoven.
